Abstract

This article aims to identify the most relevant aspects of the knowledge that adolescent women have about the human papillomavirus and cervical cancer. A bibliographical research was carried out in different databases to investigate the knowledge of adolescents about the causal agent of cervical cancer, the cofactors that contribute to the development of the disease and the methods of prevention and screemning. The vast majority of research focuses on the evaluation of knowledge about the characteristics of the human papillomavirus and the diseases it causes, the risk cofactors for contracting the human papillomavirus infection and its evolution to cervical cancer, the importance of prevention through the vaccines that exist to reduce the risk of infection by this virus and an opportune diagnosis with the papanicolaou technique. Thus, knowledge in adolescents about the human papillomavirus and cervical cancer is a protective factor that should continue to increase through early detection programs for cervical cancer, emphasizing health education.
