Abstract
Introduction: The emotional burden represents the degree to which primary caregivers perceive deterioration in their health status, economic situation, and social and personal life resulting from the tasks required to care for the patient. Sociodemographic changes, such as increased life expectancy, aging, and higher survival rates of older adults with chronic degenerative diseases, increase the need for care for this population and pose significant challenges in the care of the elderly. Objective: To describe the emotional burden experienced by informal primary caregivers of hospitalized geriatric patients. Method: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted, in which caregiver burden was assessed using the Zarit scale. The sample consisted of 80 caregivers of patients treated at a second-level public hospital. The analyses were performed using the SPSS software, version 20. Results: It was found that care was mainly provided by women, and that 18.8% of the caregivers had some level of burden. Conclusions: Providing care to a hospitalized older adult can become a profoundly disruptive experience for the caregiver, leading to significant alterations in their emotional well-being. Various factors, including the sex of the caregiver or the older adult, marital status, and the elder patient's medical condition, may significantly impact the emergence and intensity of caregiver burden.
