Abstract
Forest and agroforestry plantations capture carbon and store it primarily in hard biomass (wood), leaves, branches, bark, and roots; this depends on the species composition of a forest or plantation and the effect of local climatic factors. The objective was to determine carbon and carbon dioxide storage in a Eucalyptus spp. plantation on the Campus of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the National University of Asunción (FCA UNA). A 10,200 m² plot was established to analyze dasometrics variables, estimate tree and herbaceous biomass, and measure carbon in vegetation and soil. The study of the Eucalyptus spp. plantation showed a predominance of tree biomass over herbaceous biomass, highlighting the important role of trees in biomass accumulation within the system. This suggests that tree components are critical to maximizing carbon storage and sustainable productivity in these systems. These results highlight the potential of managing Eucalyptus spp. for sustainable production and storage of biomass and carbon. In conclusion, the Eucalyptus spp. plantation of the FCA UNA experimental field constitutes a carbon reservoir in the San Lorenzo District, contributing to mitigating the effects of greenhouse gases.
