Abstract

This study aims to analyze the motivational, contextual, experiential, and sociodemographic factors that influence the choice of homeschooling among Chilean families and to understand how this educational modality addresses needs related to well-being, learning, and family values in contrast to the traditional school system. A mixed exploratory-descriptive research design was employed, involving a survey of 360 families residing in Chile’s 16 regions and abroad who choose homeschooling through the Colegio Virtual de Chile. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore families’ experiences and perceptions in more depth. Findings reveal that homeschooling emerges as a planned and informed educational choice oriented toward emotional well-being, learning quality, and alignment with family values. The main motivations identified are pedagogical and protective in nature, particularly regarding concerns about school environments perceived as unsafe. Digital education institutions, especially the Colegio Virtual de Chile, play a mediating role in families’ transition to homeschooling by offering flexible, interactive, and personalized learning models that ease adaptation. In Chile, homeschooling is consolidating as a strategic educational alternative that enables families to manage their children’s education autonomously and coherently, responding to both structural tensions in the traditional school system and specific needs for protection and holistic development.
