Abstract

In the literature review research process, a description of the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and depression worldwide has been made from the aspects associated with the literature in the area. Taking into account the historical relationship between psychological disorders and epidemics, it was verified that a change in routines and individual and collective expectations ends up reflecting alterations in variables of relevance for the mental health area, such as variables related to depression because they are directly or indirectly connected to the effects and measures resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, verifying the risk factors that trigger depression, the presence of suicide in society and health professionals was sought in bibliographic references from December 2019 to December 2020, considering the indexes Virtual Library, Google Scholar, Elsevier, Wiley Online Library, Scielo, Sciencedirect, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (ARCA -Fiocruz), Id online Revista Multidisciplinar e de Psicologia , Hospital Universitário UFSC, Repositorio Institucional da Universidade Aberta (UAb), ISPOR Press, General Psychiatry (GPSYCH). Social isolation during the pandemic was found to be one of the main factors for the increase in the number of cases of depression, as well as domestic violence against women, the elderly and children. Likewise, not being able to bury family, friends and acquaintances in the traditional way had a psychological impact. The research consulted showed that the prevention of anxiety, depression and suicides through educational programs with trained professionals could reduce the consequences of social isolation, as well as the damage it caused to mental health.
