Abstract

According to the WHO, suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 29 year olds, therefore, young students would not be exempt from this act. The overall objective was to identify suicidal ideation in university students. It was a non-experimental, descriptive, comparative, cross-sectional, quantitative study, included 130 students intentionally for convenience of a Private University, conducted in May 2023. The instrument used was the Beck Suicidal Ideation Scale, consisting of 20 Likert items, such as sociodemographic variables such as age, sex, careers, and locations. For data collection, a Google form was created that contained the informed consent and the instrument sent by WhatsApp through the course delegates. Data analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel 2019 and SPSS version 20. The results included students from the careers of medicine, psychology, accounting, business, education, and nursing, allowing us to identify the presence of suicidal ideation in students with 22%, a passive desire for suicide 22% and 78% active desire for suicide. The average age was 18 to 28 years, 71% women and 29% men. In conclusion, it was possible to identify suicidal ideation in university students of a private university, corresponding to 47% (n:13) medical students, 32% (n:9) psychology and 21% (n:6) nursing. However, in the rest of the races, suicidal ideation was not identified. No statistical differences were found in terms of sex in the suicidal ideation factor.
