Knowledge about the use of contraceptives in middle level students of an educational center in Asunción, Paraguay

Abstract

Contraceptive methods are prevention techniques. They are classified according to their way of acting: barrier, chemical, surgical and natural. The objective of the study was to identify the students’ knowledge about contraceptive methods. The study was observational, descriptive, cross-sectional. The population consisted of students from the María Serrana Educational Center from the 1st to the 3rd year on average in the city of Asunción in Paraguay. The sampling was non-probability for convenience, which included 51 students. The rhythm, the temperature, the Billings method, interrupted intercourse and the thermal sinus method are examples of natural methods and are ineffective. Of the 51 students: 34 knew the IUD, 18 knew the vaginal ring, 29 knew the intradermal, 28 knew the adhesive, 35 knew the injectable contraceptives, 38 knew the oral contraceptives, 43 knew the morning-after pill, 38 knew the condom female, 50 knew the male condom. It is concluded that the majority of the interviewed students indicated that they knew the male condom; STIs identified were HIV-AIDS, syphilis, and genital herpes, with 84% of students.
