Abstract

Liver cirrhosis is a chronic and irreversible disease. Infections are one of the main reasons for decompensation and mortality. The objective of the study was to find out the frequency of isolated bacteria in liver cirrhosis patients at the Hospital de Clínicas. The medical records and blood cultures of patients with a diagnosis of liver cirrhosis hospitalized in the Hospital de Clínicas from January 2015 to January 2019 were reviewed. The information was analyzed using Epiinfo. The results were 114 clinical records analyzed, 96 met criteria to be included in the present study. The average age of the patients was 58.63 ± 17.8 years. A 39% frequency of bacteremia was found, with an aetiological predominance of gram negative bacteria. There was an average of 19.7 days of hospital stay. In conclusion, the most frequently isolated microbial species were Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli.
