Abstract
Introduction: Emergency contraception (EC) offers people an important second chance to prevent pregnancy. When there is a possibility of failure of regular contraception, EC should be considered as a back-up method to ensure contraception for the woman, however, it should not be used as a regular method of family planning, since the side effects of EC, they become more intense and frequent. Objective: To determine the knowledge and uses of emergency oral contraception (AOE) in fifth-year students of the Medicine School of the Faculty of Medicine of the National University of the Northeast. Methodology: descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study with students who are in the 5th year in the months of August to September 2020. To collect the data, a survey was created in Google Forms that was sent via WhatsApp. Subsequently, a database was created and analyzed with EpiInfo V7. Results: All respondents answered correctly on the definition of EmOC, contraindications. 81% mention that ECP can be used up to 2 times a year. 57.1% do not know what the so-called “double method” of protection consists of. 47.6% of those surveyed do not know the Yuzpe method. Conclusion: In general, a high knowledge about AE was observed in the studied group, which strengthens the discourse of these future health professionals, who should give family planning options in the short term.
